is a reference to the "slenderman" meme in case you didnt know. Slenderman attacks you if you see him, so do endermen. Slenderman has really long legs and arms, so do endermen. and the names are the same.
You can get a good view of how creepy slenderman is at about 3:00

notches is adding these in 1.8 and they wont attack you until you look away from them then they move very VERY fast. they also move blocks around aswell. There is a link for more info in the portal.
